Ingrid’s 1 in 8 made its official debut at The High Dive on Morena Boulevard last night. This beer, a Belgian Amber Ale made with cocoa nibs and ginger amongst other ingredients, is the first collaboration between Coronado Brewing Co. and Ballast Point. It was inspired by Ingrid Qua, owner of the High Dive, and all the women in the world fighting for a cure for breast cancer. The fact that 1 in 8 women will develop the disease is the origin of the name. Ingrid was diagnosed with breast cancer in September and received a call about being involved in a collaboration beer a week later. She was more than happy to express her gratitude: “You expect family and friends to support you, but to have the beer community do the same is amazing.”

Part of the proceeds will go towards breast cancer research via The Susan G. Komen Foundation, so go drink for a cause at these locations: The High Dive, Newport Pizza, Small Bar, Hamiltons, BLAH, Stone, The Neighborhood, The Regal Beagle, and O’Brien’s. Ingrid’s 1 in 8 is also on tap at Pizza Port OB, and Ingrid told us that just last Sunday a man took his grandmother, mother and aunt there for a pint following the Breast Cancer Walk in Balboa Park. Ingrid’s personal goal: “to have a pint at each spot.”
Ingrid also runs Chicks for Beer, which is a relaxed social meet up held at The High Dive for women only. Each month, a different brewer comes to talk about his beer with the ladies. $20 gets you bountiful tasters, food pairings and a cool mug. The next Chicks for Beer event is November 23rd. Then, on December 14th, the Bruery from Placentia will be the featured brewery. Ingrid is also very excited about Ballast Point taking over all twenty taps tomorrow night - it’s a can’t-miss event (with Ingrid’s 1 in 8 available on cask), and yes, boys are allowed.
