Coming Up: Avery Rare Beer Dinner @ Union Kitchen & Tap

December 4, 2012 By Ryan Lamb

Part of what makes San Diego such a great beer town isn’t just the breweries that call this city home, but those high-quality ones that we attract from other regions.

On Thursday night, President and Brewmaster of Boulder, Colorado’s Avery Brewing Company Adam Avery will bring some of his rarest barrel-aged beers to Union Kitchen & Tap in Encinitas for a four-course, eight-beer pairing dinner.

The menu:

Beginning
Confit of California rabbit, meyer lemon caviar, roasted parsnip puree, crispy guanciale wafer and rabbit reduction, paired with Muscat d’ Amour & Recolte Sauvage:

Muscat d’Amour - 30% fermented White Muscat grapes from Bookcliff Winery aged in Chardonnay barrels. Bottled January 2012 - 10.78% ABV

Recolte Sauvage - 30% fermented Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from Bookcliff Winery aged in Cabernet Sauvignon barrels. Bottled January 2012 - 11.03% ABV

Next
Mesquite smoked “Mary’s” duck agnolotti, caramelized pluot BBQ, sweet honey cornbread dust and pickled romanesco, paired with Depuceleuse & Dihos Dactylion:

Depuceleuse - 100% Brettanomyces-fermented red ale aged with sour cherries in Zinfandel barrels. Bottled March 2010 - 10.08% ABV

Dihos Dactylion - House Brettanomyces and house pediococcus strains fermented on a strong red sour ale aged for 18 months in fresh Plumpjack Cabernet Sauvignon Barrels. Bottled February 2011 - 10.74% ABV

After That
Wild Boar duo of crispy belly, pommes anna, guajillo chile ketchup; charred loin, fried gnocchi and Black Knight carrot nage, paired with Oud Floris & Odio Equum:

Oud Floris - Blend of 4 different beers from 13 different barrels and reminiscent of the flavor profiles of the fabled Flanders brown ales. Bottled June 2012 - 9.39% ABV

Odio Equum - Lactic-forward sour beer, brewed with raspberries and aged in fresh Cabernet Sauvignon barrels from Montagna Vineyards in Napa Valley. Bottled September 2012 - 7.10% ABV

Done
Julian apple risotto “rice pudding”, pumpkin bread crouton, red eye gravy orb, dehydrated apple and pepita toffee, paired with Rumpkin & Uncle Jacob’s Stout:

Rumpkin - Pumpkin ale aged in Goslings dark rum barrels and spiced with nutmeg, cinnamon, and ginger. Bottled October 2012 - 18.3% ABV

Uncle Jacob’s Bourbon Barrel Stout - Imperial stout aged in Makers Mark bourbon barrels for six months. Bottled February 2012 - 17.42% ABV

Tickets are $55 and are available here.

Careful with these big beers! Only two of them are below 10% ABV. Call a cab or a friend for a ride.
