Amid lawsuit by Monkey Paw founder, Coronado plans sale of the brand

May 29, 2018 By Ryan Lamb

The original summons

Today, Coronado Brewing Co. announced plans to sell the Monkey Paw brand, which they acquired in 2017.

“The sale of the Monkey Paw brand allows Coronado to focus its financial and human resources on growing the Coronado brand. The company will continue to operate the Monkey Paw pub in downtown San Diego while offers are entertained,” a Coronado press release stated.

The East Village space itself, including the brewery and pub, is also up for sale.

On April 25, 2018, Monkey Paw founder Scot Blair filed a breach of contract/warranty lawsuit against the company, alleging that he is owed $33,534.00, plus interest, from a “written promissory note” on or about September 1, 2017.

Just last month, Monkey Paw won a gold medal at the World Beer Cup for MacGavin’s Plaid Monkey, a Scottish-style ale. Coronado officials accepted the award; Blair was not present on stage.

Coronado declined to comment on the suit, while Blair did not respond by time of publication.
